The meteorological observatory at Hohenpeissenberg is the world’s oldest mountain observatory. Situated 80km southwest of Munich, in the foothills of the alps, continuous meteorological measurements have been performed since 1781. In 1990, the Observatory became a Global Station of the Global Atmospheric Watch programme (GAW) as well as a Climate Reference Point of the German weather network. Additionally the Observatory supports the Environmental Research Station "Schneefernerhaus" 300m below the summit of Zugspitze. Scientific measurements, beginning with continuous observations of ozone started in 1967 and have been expanded to encompass the measurements of various traces gases, aerosols and precipitation parameters. The research radar, also in place since 1986, is continuously upgrading the radar network with the latest knowledge about scan strategies and algorithms, thus providing reliable weather forecast and emergency alerts.
